What could have caused my smoke alarm at home to emit a low continuous annoying sound in absence of smoke?

There was no smoke or fire. I just moved into this condo and I noticed that he sounded intermittently as a second match gojear bird. This morning, I woke to a noise that sounded a siren-continuum is not as loud as a smoke alarm that detects smoke. My smoke alarm is connected to the electrical wiring. Unscrew the holder of this morning and don 't think you have a battery. If it 's dirty, how clean? It has only a dime-sized holes with a tiny pinhole in his face.
